A hypothetical generalization of Storms’ Model to explain diversities in human sexual orientation.
Studies have found that:
- Homosexual men and heterosexual women share common brain response patterns to Androstadienone exposure.
- Homosexual women and heterosexual men share common brain response patterns to Estratetraenol exposure.
Considering the evidence on the common patterns, a further quantification of Storms’ Model is in interest, where the neural response patterns to Androstadienone(AND) and Estratetraenol(EST) are suggested as potential mediators of sexual attraction.
Storms originally formulated the model with hetero- and homo-sexuality axes. However, considering the mentioned response patterns, sexual orientation may better be conceptualized with male- and female-orientedness axes. (i.e. male homosexuality and female heterosexuality share common neural mechanisms in their attraction to AND)
Investigating such a model would be important in understanding asexuality in a coherent framework with other sexual orientations. Operationalizing asexuality as ‘experiencing less or no sexual attraction’, my hypotheses are as follows:
- Asexual men and women, either self-identified or non-self-identified, will share common response patterns to AND and EST. (less/no sexual attraction to males and females)
- Asexual men, homosexual men, heterosexual women will share common response patterns to EST. (less/no sexual attraction to females)
- Asexual women, homosexual women, heterosexual men will share common response patterns to AND. (less/no sexual attraction to males)
- Bisexual men, bisexual women, homosexual men, heterosexual women will share common response patterns to AND. (sexual attraction to males)
- Bisexual women, bisexual men, homosexual women, heterosexual men will share common response patterns to EST. (sexual attraction to females)
